This can be quite frightening. Though there are different pregnancy rashes, but one common one is call pupp rash. This stands for pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy. It can occur be extremely itchy and of course looking at a red rash on one's own body that is spreading may bring up a sense of lack of control. There's already usually problems with sleep comfort and physical heaviness, now a rash?
Remember, that for the most part, the pupp pregnancy rash will resolve at the time of delivering your baby or shortly afterwards. Often the rash will occur in the last trimester of pregnancy but this may not be always the case. It may be due to hormones or the body stretching. The cause is not certain. Many women are concerned it can be spread or caught to the fetus but it will not harm the baby in any way whatsoever.
Yes, it is itchy. Yes it is uncomfortable. But keep your eye on the fact that your baby will be such a gift. Some women will have their delivery induced if the itching is very unbearable. There are antihistamines and other items your doctor can give you to reduce itching and uncomfortableness. Topical lotions such as sarna, health food items such as flax seed oil and dandelion root have been cited as helpful by some. Don't forget to take oatmeal baths and soothe your skin by splashing cold water. Remember this is temporary and will resolve. Don't add to your stress as stress can exacerbate a rash. Instead, de-stress yourself using simple breathing techniques and soothing music

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)I appreciate this article as its given me me insight. I am 39 weeks pregnant with my first baby and a registered nurse. I have been going crazy in modifying my diet and washing all my clothes in dreft and taking oatmeal baths. I was concerned if this will spread to the baby, I am relieved it is not. This is helpful thank you for the informative post :)
I developed this rash also about a week ago and I was told by midwife to take piriton/piriteze. I didn't get ANY sleep for 2 days, It was driving me insane. I find it worked for me! within hours of taking it the itchyness went away and i felt extremely drowsy (helpfully, this is one of the side effects of taking it) No more sleepless nights! I'm now 40weeks so hopefully baby's coming soon.....
